No longer fill ad hoc vacancies but build up a pool of interested professionals to anticipate the growth of Jumbo. With this goal in mind, together with Jumbo Supermarket, we organised a networking event for Branch Managers on 20 February 2018; the 'Jumbo Experience Day'. The aim of this event? To get to know each other in an accessible way, understand each other's ambitions and to be in contact with each other, now or in the future.

A lot of competition for the managers

Where Jumbo themselves took care of organising the event, we ensured that enough suitable participants were present. Our data showed that many professionals meet the profile, 11,876 to be precise, but that there is also a lot of competition. In the Netherlands, there were 375 similar vacancies in the previous 16 weeks.

We took a look in their ‘backyard’

Via LinkedIn to find the right professionals and invited them personally. Many of them responded with enthusiasm, often they had not experienced an event like this before and they took the opportunity to look in Jumbo’s ‘backyard’. After a telephone qualification (to ensure they meet the profile), no fewer than 38 professionals were present at the event.

The Experience Day

During the Experience the professionals arrived at the Jumbo Food Market in Veghel. There, the supermarket’s vision of Food Retail was shared and the role of Branch Manager was discussed in more detail.

After a tour of the Food Market, the group went on a speed date with Jumbo professionals to get to know each other better. At the end, a drink with a walking dinner was organised, a great opportunity to network further with each other and share ambitions.

Result

The enthusiasm of the participants and of Jumbo is a great result in itself. We have exchanged ideas and we have been able to inspire each other. A quote from one of the participants: “What a lovely, innovative way to get to know each other and to see with one’s own eyes what Jumbo is doing.

No fewer than 38 Branch Managers from all over the Netherlands were present at the event. There were 19 of them registered in our Talent Community and no fewer than four have since joined the Jumbo team.

Staying top of mind with the target group

Professionals who are currently happy where they are but want to stay in contact with Jumbo in the future will be in the Talent Community. In this online application of Dutchwebshark, the supermarket chain regularly posts messages and enters into discussions to stay top-of-mind with this target group. Jumbo now has the right professionals within reach for any new vacancies.

In brief, an event is an innovative way to get in touch with the right professionals in an accessible way, especially at a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult to connect people to your organisation. In addition, this ensures that Jumbo no longer has to search for good candidates on an ad hoc basis. We are now building a talent pool that puts interested professionals at their fingertips which enables them to quickly anticipate the growth of Jumbo.

This had advantages not only for Jumbo, but this event also ensured that participants gained a good idea of the supermarket and the role because the Jumbo Branch Managers were also present. Based on this, they have all the information they need to decide for themselves whether this is an organisation that suits them or not. The talent pool will enable them to stay in contact with the supermarket in the long term.
